LEGION Act signed into law

The American Legion’s eligibility criteria immediately changes from seven war eras to two: April 6, 1917, to Nov. 11, 1918, and Dec. 7, 1941 to a time later determined by the federal government.

No other restrictions to American Legion membership are changed.

A larger pool of veterans are now eligible for The American Legion which will also open their family members to eligibility in the Sons of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary as well.

Why You Should Join?

To every eligible veteran, we offer you this invitation and opportunity to be a Legionnaire by joining Coleman A. Young Post 202.

You will be joining an organization that has been in the forefront of advocating for Veterans and their families since 1919.

A fair and equitable GI Bill of Rights for Veterans, A viable and responsive VA Health Care System, persistent efforts to secure recognition and treatment for illness caused by Agent Orange and unknown illnesses from the Persian Gulf War, reminding politicians at all levels of government that there are close to 2 million united voices that will constantly remind them that they must live up to Abraham Lincoln’s quote “To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan.”

You will have in your possession an American Legion Membership Card, which gives the member access to nearly 12,500 Legion Posts world wide and guarantees that our members will always have a fellow veteran nearby.

But more important are the intangible benefits of membership, the ones you can’t put a dollar value to:

The lifelong friendships that develop from being actively involved with other veterans.  The leadership qualities one gains by holding offices at the Post, District, Department or National echelons of The Legion.

The sense of accomplishment one feels after being part of a patriotic ceremony, memorial ceremony, School Award presentation or being cheered by your fellow citizens in a Memorial Day or Veterans Day Parade.

Most importantly you will enjoy the self-satisfaction of knowing that just by being a member we are helping others less fortunate than ourselves.

All the above-mentioned benefits of membership, both tangible and intangible add up to one thing – OPPORTUNITY.

Our Membership Dues are $45.00 per year a very small price to pay for the benefits you will receive and the opportunities you will enjoy.

The American Legion Magazine, which contains updates on the status of legislation that directly affects all veterans along with information on outfit reunions, monthly interviews with key government officials, debates on the “Big Issues” from two opposing points of view, occasional accounts of real-life experiences during the war years…and much, much more.

The Michigan Legionnaire magazine which provides information specifically for Michigan Legionnaires and highlights the efforts of the Michigan Legion Family’s volunteerism efforts in the communities that they serve.

You will enjoy having trained, certified Department Service Officers handling your benefit claims with the VA, from beginning to end and all free of charge.

As a member you will be able to take advantage of American Legion Member Benefits: Substantial travel discounts for both the member and family include motel and rental car discounts, eye care plan, and the discount prescription program.  Also, medical and dental insurance plans are available.  Click on link for more information: American Legion Member Benefits.
