You Fought for Our Home. We'll Fight for Yours.

The American Legion places special priority on the issue of veteran homelessness.

The American Legion has stepped up its support for homeless veterans, coordinating a Homeless Veterans Task Force among its departments to augment homeless service providers and fill in the gaps where no assistance programs are available.

All departments have a Homeless Veterans Task Force chairperson and an Employment chairperson who are capable of providing assistance to any homeless or financially destitute veteran who contacts them.

The two chairpersons also can coordinate activities with posts in their departments to aid homeless veterans and their families and prevent future homelessness among veterans.

The American Legion applauds Congress for their substantial funding for veterans’ homeless programs, as well as the VA, HUD and DOL for their implementation of programs that have saved the lives of thousands of veterans.

With veterans making up nearly 10 percent of the nation’s total adult homeless population, The American Legion is committed to seeing VA’s goal of ending veteran homelessness come to fruition.

The American Legion's goal is to ensure that every community across the United States has programs and services in place to get housing for homeless veterans, while also connecting at-risk veterans with local services and resources they need.

The Legion will continue to place special priority on the issue of veteran homelessness and calls on Congress, and the VA, to do the same.

TAL HVTF WEBSITE
"We’ve got to keep up the fight to end the tragedy of veteran homelessness. Today, I announced that, across the nation, we have now reduced the number of homeless veterans by 47 percent -- nearly half -- since 2010."
President Barack Obama, August 1, 2016

The Department of Michigan American Legion Homeless Veterans Assistance efforts are coordinated through the Homeless Veterans Task Force Chairman.  Their task is to provide information to the Michigan Legion Family about Homeless Veterans Resources and be a force multiplier for our Homeless Veteran Partners.

The Homeless Veteran Task Force (HVTF) mission is to be an active partner with the VA in working toward the day when homelessness among Veterans is rare, brief and nonrecurring.

We will be dedicated to addressing the supportive service, healthcare and other needs of Veterans who are either homeless or at-risk of homelessness, while helping them access resources that provide affordable housing, job training and placement, household essentials and more.

The HVTF, Homeless Veteran Task Force Chairperson (HVTFC) and the Reconnect Committee will work to coordinate efforts of the Michigan Legion Family (MLF) in assisting homeless or at-risk of homeless Veterans that they may encounter in their communities.

The HVTFC will support the mission and objectives of the National American Legion Homeless Veterans Task Force who place a special priority on the issue of veteran homelessness and helping our struggling brothers and sisters-in-arms by working on a global level, lobbying for legislation affecting veteran homelessness and on a local level directly assisting veterans who have fallen on tough times and are without a place to live or facing the prospect of it.

The Department of Michigan HVTFC is proud to work with the other 54 Legion Department HVTFC’s to ensure local assistance is available to Michigan Veterans.
